Book Description:

After an exhausting day at work, hitting the drive-thru or nuking a pre-fab meal is all too often the go-to decision for feeding a family. Cooking a meal from scratch using fresh ingredients can seem beyond the average person’s time, energy, or financial means. But with mounting evidence pointing to processed food and our industrial food system as the culprits behind many of our nation’s health problems—including obesity, diabetes, and cancer—it’s now more important than ever to be fully informed about what goes on your family’s dinner plates.

If you’re ready to take control of your food choices but don’t know the difference between grass-fed versus grain-fed, pastured versus free-range, or organic versus sustainable, read this book to discover:

• How to create your own thirty-month plan to convert your family from junk food to real food, without a revolt!

• Recipes and advice on planning and prepping meals so you can make homecooked a habit for your family

 • Instructions for getting the most out of produce using techniques such as lacto-fermentation, dehydrating, and canning

•  introduction to the world of farm-direct sales, including tips on locating local farms, seeing through marketing buzzwords, and shopping with CSAs Ditching the Drive-Thru exposes the insidious hold the commercial food industry has taken over the fast-paced lives of the average American and the danger these processed foods and diet plans pose to our health, environment, and emotional wellbeing.

Learn how to break free from the grind and return to a simpler relationship with food from farmers, not factories, and home-cooked meals that are created in your kitchen, not on a conveyor belt.

Today, Hollis joins us for an interview about his writing, his opinion on reviews, and the books that have influenced his life.

Please join me as I welcome Paul Hollis on iRead Book Tours.

Be sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win his exciting new book!

Interview with Paul Hollis

Paul Hollis

iRead: Welcome to our site, Paul. Let's talk a little about your writing. How would you define your style of writing?

PH: My writing style is very visual. It’s important for me to completely immerse the reader, drawing him/her totally into each scene. I want the reader to see what’s going on around them, feel the excitement, and hear the voices. When readers say The Hollow Man should be on the big screen, I feel like I’ve made the story completely real.

iRead: Do you write every day?

PH: I try to write every day. I’m either writing or thinking about writing for most of my waking hours.

iRead: What is your writing schedule?

PH: Being a night person, my most productive writing times are between 4:00 p.m. and midnight.

iRead: Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?

PH: The ritual giving me the most positive juju is fairly simple. When I first began writing, I felt the need to always finish my thoughts by the end of each writing day. It made for a fluid conclusion to my sessions. Sometimes the end might come at 10:00 pm, or 3:00 am. Consequently, it was difficult returning to the plot, characters, or dialogue to begin my next session. Many times, it was painful to pick up my thought process the next day without false starts, backtracking, or long periods of outlining.

Now, I always end in the middle of something, whether it’s a conversation, a key plot twist, or a moment of action. When I sit for the next session, I find it much easier to jump back into exactly the mindset where I left off. I feel my time is managed better as well.

iRead: What are the special challenges in writing a series?

PH: There are three important challenges I encounter in writing a series.

First, sustaining a character arc can create difficulties. A character begins a series with certain viewpoints that change through events in the initial narrative. As the second narrative begins, the character should reflect the impact of the first novel and the third installment needs to show continued growth.

It’s also not easy to maintain the story arc across multiple books while ending each with a resolution that leaves the reader satisfied. Try to plan a high level view of your series then plot convenient ending points.

Lastly, the tone of each book should reflect the series but not serve as a rerun. There should be something that surprises but at the same time, the reader is reentering the same world left at the end of the last book. If it is too different, the reader may feel betrayed and stop reading.

iRead: A lot of authors are frustrated by readers who don’t understand how important reviews are? What would you say to a reader who doesn’t think his or her review matters?

PH: Most indie writers don’t have much luck getting decent book reviews, but I’ve found it’s one of the best ways to generate sales. Reader reviews are the electronic version of word-of-mouth. Nothing says ‘buy this book’ better than a personal recommendation. Reviews control rankings, impact the buying decision, and ultimately sales on sites like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, etc.

And, if you’re worried about giving a less than stellar review, an author should be able to learn something from every review no matter which star count is attached to it. So either way, a reader’s review is critical to a book’s success.

iRead: Having our work out there to be judged by strangers is often daunting for writers. Do you have any tips on handling a negative review?

PH: My first reaction is always denial, followed closely by the urge to throat-punch the reviewer for not understanding the book. Eventually though I have to go to plan “C” because the first two options do no one any good. It’s very difficult to separate oneself from the situation because someone just called your baby ugly. But the review isn’t personal, usually.

Honestly ask yourself three questions. Do I want to make my novel the best it can be? Is what the reviewer saying legitimate? What can I learn from this? I’ve learned that both bad and good reviews can be helpful, and I learn something every day.

iRead: We all know the old saying; you can’t judge a book by its cover. This is true. However, how much importance do you place on your book cover design?

PH: I believe the cover is extremely important to your book’s success. As a reader, I look at the cover first, then the title, possibly a glance at the author’s name and finally turn it over to read the back cover blurb. The cover has about three seconds to capture my attention. If it does, I pick it up. If I’m not convinced I look at the title for another three seconds if I’m a slow reader to determine how the title fits with the cover imagery. If I don’t pick it up now, it stays on the shelf.

iRead: What books have influenced your life?

PH: As a young boy I was fascinated by the Robert Louis Stevenson classic Kidnapped. I dreamed of the open sea, with the wind in my hair and salt spray on my face. It was the definition of freedom. My love affair with travel began with this book and has lasted a lifetime. Being my first memorable book, Kidnapped also opened a world of imagination and learning for me. I earned a degree in English Literature, where I took full advantage of the best in novels, poetry, and drama.

As an adult, To Kill a Mockingbird has stayed with me the longest and most affects my writing today. Harper Lee has a talent for narration, visual with a cinematic flare that effortlessly blends scenes without bumps. And it would be difficult to find two better characterizations in modern literature than Atticus and Scout.

iRead: Thank you, Paul!

    World's Best Story
Lauren Carr's iReads book tour is amazing!  She gets real results.  Not only did I get thousands of new eyes on my series, but I grew my following on all social media channels as well.  Lauren has a dedicated group of reviewers and bloggers who are competent and reliable - no more wasted ARCs mailed out with no results.
    - Michelle Cox, author of the Henrietta and Inspector Howard Novels
